SUMMARY:Christmas Eve Carols & Communion by Candlelight
DESCRIPTION:All Christmas Eve services originate from the “midnight mass.” It wasn’t until the late 1970s and early 80s that churches started offering services earlier in the evening to be more “family-friendly.” FUMCLR is one of the few churches in Little Rock that still offer a late service on Christmas Eve. Because of this\, we make our 11:00 pm service a unique experience and not just a later version of our 6:00 pm service. We will heighten the sense of awe and mystery.\n\nThis year\, the sanctuary will be lit almost completely by candlelight\, reminding us how the heavenly host of angels broke the darkness\, proclaiming the Good News to the Shepherds. At the end of the service\, we will sing Silent Night on the church’s front steps\, reminding us of how the star announced the birth of Christ to all the world and captured the attention of some wise ones far away. The music and atmosphere will try to capture the intimacy and simplicity of God coming as a humble child.\n\nIf this experience intrigues you\, We hope you’ll join us at 11:00 pm this Christmas Eve. It’s a great opportunity to invite your friends and neighbors. Experience this unique worship that you can’t get anywhere else. Join us in the Sanctuary on downtown Little Rock at 723 Center Street (corner of 8th & Center)\,

SUMMARY:Three Pastors Walk into a Bar
DESCRIPTION:How do we live as people of faith in 2025? \nWhat does it mean to be the church in the current political climate? \nHow do our faith and beliefs inform our political and social ideology? \nWhat is God calling us to right now? \nThese are the kinds of questions I’ve been batting around with clergy friends of mine recently. Rev. Preston Clegg of Second Baptist\, Rev. Kate Alexander of Christ Episcopal\, and I have been wrestling with what it means to be Christian these days. We haven’t found any definitive answers\, but because our churches are neighbors\, we thought we’d invite our churches to have these conversations together. \nStarting this month\, we’re holding three events for all three of our churches to come together. During these events\, Preston\, Kate\, and I will start with a discussion on our topic and open it up for reflections and questions. We’ll rotate around to each church\, and you’re invited to bring a brown-bag lunch. \nAs we were planning these events\, we said they feel like the start of an old joke\, “Three pastors walk into a bar.” So that’s what we named them. But the title is more than silly–we want this to be informal and filled with personal connection\, like you’re chatting with friends at a bar or coffee shop. Join us for rich connection and to meet our neighbor churches (dates\, times\, topics\, and location listed below). Together\, we’ll experience God’s grace and discover a compelling hope.

SUMMARY:To Us a Child is Born
DESCRIPTION:The Music Ministry of First United Methodist Church is proud to offer in worship To Us a Child Is Born by Johann Kuhnau\, a cantata for choir\, soloists\, strings\, and organ in worship December 7th at 11:00 AM. Johann Kuhnau was the cantor at Thomaskirche\, a position where his successor was the great J.S. Bach. In fact\, for centuries\, musicologists assumed this work (Uns ist ein Kind geboren in its original German) to have been of Bach’s design. Our choir has been hard at work to learn this wonderful piece; you don’t want to miss it!

SUMMARY:Wednesday Nights on Center Street
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to launch Wednesday night on Center Street again for the Lenten season.  We’ll meet for dinner from 5-5:45 pm\, followed by programming at 6-7 pm. \nBible With Brittany: The Book of Esther\nThis class is for teens and adults! Explore the harrowing and inspiring book of Esther through discussion\, creativity\, and fun! Short weekly readings are provided but not required. This class is open to adults and youth. \nThe Small and the Mighty\nIn today’s turbulent world\, it’s essential to take a moment to remember those who have contributed to making the world more just\, peaceful\, good\, and free. Rev. Natasha will lead us through Sharon McMahon’s book\, The Small and the Mighty. This book highlights twelve ordinary Americans whose courage helped shape the character of our country. McMahon proves that the most extraordinary Americans are often ordinary people who didn’t make it into the textbooks. \nRoundtable Worship: Current Political Climate\nJoin us for an intentional space of song\, prayer\, and conversation to process our current experiences of the political climate. Roundtable Worship is an opportunity to engage in meaningful and thoughtful conversation in an intentional way. Roundtable Worship is a restorative justice practice that seeks to bring people together across varying opinions\, theologies\, and ideologies to know one another’s experience of being human. The experience will be led by Rev. Haley\, our Pastor of Community Engagement and a licensed social worker\, and Rev. Mary Jane Cole\, our Spiritual Director in Residence. Gathering in circle as a community is a powerful tool for holding space for all the emotions that we’ve been given as beloved children of God. Come ready to listen to your neighbor or utilize your voice if you feel moved. Above all\, come open to the way God’s grace moves deeply when we sit in circle together. Please Note: Week One we will be attending the Interfaith Conversations. \nInterfaith Conversations (First Week Only)\nRev. Patricia Matthews\, Executive Director of The Interfaith Center will lead a discussion on the importance of interfaith relationships and dialog in 2025. Come hear how the Interfaith Center is helping foster meaningful relationships across religious faiths and opening lines of conversation even when the events of the world create tension. Wednesday\, March 12th only. \nKids – First Arts with Ms. Shannon!
